Wednesday, February 25, 2026 ***CC F224/225*** 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm "The Nuclear EMC Effect ? What we do and don?t know about a 43 year old puzzle" Tyler Hague ? Physics Division Abstract: In 1983, the European Muon Collaboration (EMC) reported the results of a comparison of the structure function of iron to deuterium. It was expected that the two would be nearly identical, once Fermi motion and scaling for the number of nucleons were taken into account. The results defied expectation, showing a non-trivial structure that indicated that nuclear effects were much more complicated than previously known, dubbed the EMC Effect. In short, protons and neutrons bound in a nucleus have their structure modified in a manner that is not fully understood. Since then, numerous experiments have taken place at SLAC, JLab, and many other facilities to try to understand the nature and cause of this effect. Nearly as many models have been posited, revised, and scrapped as new data has become available, leading to the tongue-in-cheek moniker ?Every Model is Cool?. In this seminar, I will present an overview of the history of the EMC Effect, past experiments, planned future experiments, and open questions.
