ABSTRACT
On July 4, 2012, the ATLAS and CMS experiments operating at the CERN
Large Hadron Collider (LHC) announced the discovery of a new
particle compatible with the Higgs boson. Physicists have hunted the
particle for almost 50 years, and describe it is a crucial piece for
humanity's understanding of fundamental physics and, thus, the
structure and evolution of the universe. This colloquium will
include a description of the unprecedented instruments and
challenges that allowed such an accomplishment, the meaning and
relevance of the discovery, and the implications for our day-by-day
life.
