Statement of Lessons Learned

For a copy of the original report, see ¿Attachments¿ on Lessons Learned page.
When higher than normal concentrations of monomethyl mercury were identified in the Savannah River Remediation (SRR) Tank Farm waste, Industrial Hygiene (IH) initiated an evaluation of chemical resistance performance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure worker safety.

Discussion of Activities

In April of 2015, a higher than normal concentration of monomethyl mercury was discovered in the SRR Tank Farm waste. This resulted in uncertainty regarding the adequacy of prescribed PPE to protect workers during intrusive waste tank activities.

Analysis

SRR IH reviewed the requirements listed within ASTM F739, Standard Test Method for Permeation of Liquids and Gases through Protective Clothing Material and determined that there was no monomethyl mercury breakthrough test data available for common radiological protection PPE materials such as latex rubber (used in standard SRS yellow radiological glove), or supplied air plastic suits. The only published breakthrough test data available for monomethyl mercury was for nitrile gloves.

Recommended Actions

Below are the consequences of the above event. They are provided for information and discussion purposes only.
An independent third party laboratory was contracted to perform monomethyl mercury permeability testing on the common radiological protection PPE materials (latex rubber (used in standard SRS yellow radiological glove), and supplied air plastic suits. Results of their testing concluded that the common radiological protection PPE materials provided the necessary protection for workers against dermal exposure to monomethyl mercury.

JLab Preventive Measures

In accordance with ES&H Manual Chapter 6610 Chemical Hygiene Program, Industrial Hygiene is responsible for retaining up-to-date permeation/degradation guides for hand and body PPE. Only those who have been trained are authorized to use hazardous chemicals, and only in accordance with applicable Safety Data Sheets. An Operational Safety Procedure is written and reviewed by Industrial Hygiene when work cannot comply with the Safety Data Sheets.
