<h2 style="white-space:nowrap">Statement of Lessons Learned</h2>
<pre>On May 25, 2016 SLAC Security and Emergency Management conducted a site-wide lockdown drill to prepare and train the SLAC community in case of an active threat situation. The purpose of the exercise was to provide all staff, users and contractors with the necessary steps to take in the event of an emergency that requires the site to be locked down.</pre>
<h2 style="white-space:nowrap">Discussion of Activities</h2>
<pre>Upon conclusion of the drill, a tabletop exercise was conducted involving an active shooter scenario and activation of the SLAC Emergency Operations Center and local law enforcement responders from San Mateo County Sheriff and the Menlo Park Police Department. </pre>
<h2 style="white-space:nowrap">Analysis</h2>
<pre>One of the most common questions during the exercise was: when do we use run-hide-fight versus lockdown? The answer is: If you find yourself in the immediate area of the active threat, the principles of run-hide-fight apply. The appropriate action is to do whatever you can to protect yourself. If you are in other areas on-site, and receive notification to lockdown, follow the instructions you receive. The most common instructions will be to shelter and barricade-in-place. Law enforcement response will be prompt, and lockdown will keep people away from the area of immediate threat and out of the way of the responders. It is important to know that during and immediately after the threat, anyone not in lockdown mode will be viewed and treated as a threat by law enforcement.</pre>
<h2 style="white-space:nowrap">Recommended Actions</h2>
<pre>SLAC used their mass notification system, a subset of Stanford University¿s AlertSU system, to communicate with employees during an exercise. SLAC Security and the Communications Officer supplements the notifications with emails, phone calls, and SMS text messages. The messaging also directs employees to utilize SLAC¿s internal emergency website and hotline where they can find further time-sensitive information, instructions, and status.
The current recommendation for handling an active threat/shooter situation is to run-hide-fight. The Department of Homeland Security created a video to explain what to do in the event of such a situation.

<h2 style="white-space:nowrap">JLab Preventive Measures</h2>
<pre>Jefferson Lab has a very active Emergency Management Program. City of Newport News Emergency Responders, over the past several years, have participated in a variety of simulated emergency exercises utilizing our facilities. This type of real-life scenario gives them an opportunity to apply their protocols in a realistic setting and allows Jefferson Lab to practice its emergency procedures. </pre>
