*** W&M PhysicsFest, Saturday October 27, 10am-4pm

Please join us for PhysicsFest on October 27, 10am-4pm for a
fun-filled event that brings together all the best the William & Mary
Physics Department has to offer! The topic of this year’s event is
Spectrum, and indeed we will offer a full Spectrum of activities for
all tastes and interests.

A morning poster session will feature research done by physics
undergraduate students. Later, several physics professors will present
public lectures on recent major scientific discoveries and the role of
science in the society. Our students will make learning physics fun
with engaging demonstrations and a lot of hands-on experiments.

Younger guests will never think that physics is boring after having
fun in our physics playroom, or going on a scavenger hunt through the
department research laboratories. Grownups who tag along will have a
chance to observe scientists in their natural habitat of wires, tubes
and complicated machinery, and learn first hand about the most
exciting scientific problems of today in the informal discussions with
professors and graduate students.

Finally, the day would not be complete without a scoop of our almost
famous liquid nitrogen ice cream – the most natural and delicious
dessert in town.

*** Public Stargazing, Friday October 26, 8pm-11pm

Come join the William and Mary Physics Department for an evening of
stargazing. Members of the Society of Physics Students will be on hand
to conduct guided tours of the heavens using several 8" reflecting
telescopes as well as our new 14" computer controlled telescope. See
craters on the moon, cloud bands on Jupiter, distant star clusters,
and more. Members of the campus and the larger community are welcome.

The session is scheduled for Friday, October 26, and will run
continuously from 8:00-11:00 pm, starting in the lobby of Small Hall
where you will be escorted to the roof top observatory.

If the weather looks threatening, call 757-810-6377 for last minute information.
