Human Computers: A Moment in History Featuring Dr. Christine Darden
from *Hidden
Figures*
William & Mary (W&M) invites the Williamsburg and Hampton Roads community
to join in our celebration of local heroes and history makers revealed
in *Hidden
Figures*, the book and the Academy Award Best Film nominee. We are hosting
Dr. Christine Darden, a mathematician, aeronautical engineer, and former
NASA scientist featured in the book, *Hidden Figures*. Becoming the first
African-American woman to be promoted into senior executive service at
NASA’s Langley Research Center is among her many distinctions. The event
also will include historic photos and videos of NASA’s human computers
provided and discussed by a NASA panel of scientists, including a former
W&M alum (Dr. Michelle Ferebee). These dialogues set the stage to enjoy the
inspirational *Hidden Figures* film as a community, while embracing the
educational experience of why such “hidden figures” matter. Under
challenging circumstances, African-American females were rock stars in the
STEMs, before the initiative to increase diversity in the STEMs became a
national movement.
