Hi everyone,

It became clear during the last two phone conferences that we are now at
a stage in the
development of the Moller experiment at which we need to address some
very specific
and technically detailed issues with regard to the integrating detector
system.

While many of these issues obviously need to be discussed in the larger
context of the
experiment, some of them are more appropriately discussed among a more
focused
group of people; those people I would refer to as detector development
experts.

If you consider yourself an expert in detector development and/or would
like to contribute
to the development of the Moller integrating detectors, please consider
adding yourself
to the following mailing list:

https://mailman.jlab.org/mailman/listinfo/moller_intdet

Anyone otherwise interested in keeping up with the details of the
detector development is,
of course, more than welcome to join in as well.

Sometime in the very near future, I will start to modify the Moller wiki
and establish a
list of things that need to be worked out. For the time being, here is a
rough (and most likely
incomplete) list of things that need to be addressed:

1) Quartz active volume size vs. # of channels/cost of polished quartz
2) Light guide design and light yield efficiency (obviously connected to
the previous point,
since larger quartz pieces = fewer channels may mean that the
light guide design becomes
      more complicated )
3) Pre-radiation or not (which detectors)?
     Connected to:

         - Light guide design
         - backgrounds
         - quartz thickness

4) # of pe maximization (depends on quartz thickness and cross-sectional
size, which is
connected to all of the issues mentioned above.

5) Mounting of detectors and light guides.

To varying extend, most of these issues have been looked at (mostly by
KK and his group, as
well as Dave Mack and John Leacock), but we need to revisit all of them
and put the final
detector design on a firm footing. It seems clear that the first order
business is to establish
a detailed optical simulation for the assembly.

Also, the current proposal for the detector assembly encases all
photo-tubes completely in
lead, which makes the entire detector array very heavy and places
particular constraints
on the overall design of the structure and the mounting scheme for the
individual detector
elements. This requires early interfacing and frequent dialog with JLab
engineers.

Okay, that's all I've got for now. If anyone of you has particular
knowledge or experience with
any of the above mentioned issues (or something I haven't mentioned but
you could be
important), I (we) would welcome your participation.

With best regards,

Michael
