Dear MOLLER Collaborator:

I want to report on the MOLLER internal cost review over the past couple of days, which I attended primarily as an observer. This review was initiated by Lab Management to assess the MOLLER project’s cost range and schedule estimate developed by the project team in preparation for CD-1. There was a brief closeout yesterday afternoon; the remarks were uniformly positive. Congratulations to the project team!

There were a few recommendations and comments focused on improving our preparations for the CD-1 review. The committee took note of the enormous amount of work already carried out and asserted that the project was right where it needed to be at this stage of the project. The committee drilled down on details of the project and had long interviews with the CAMs.

It is a tribute to the tremendous efforts and the meticulous preparations of the project team to achieve this very positive endorsement. We owe Howard and his team a great debt of gratitude to situate us to be in such a strong position moving forward.

Our next review in December (the conceptual design review) is also an internal review but more focused on whether we have defined the physics requirements well enough for the project and also that this design can meet the physics goals of the experiment. The presentations in this next review will be led by the experimental contacts with assistance from the project team. Let us aim to do as well as the project team did in the review just completed.

Mark and I are in the midst of developing the agenda for the December review and will be working with possible speakers over the next week. A group of us are also busy writing the Conceptual Design Report which will be the primary basis for assessment for this review. We will update the full collaboration on the materials being developed in the upcoming weeks.

Cheers, KK
