Subject: [Moller] FW: CD-3a Approved for Moller!
Dear MOLLER Collaborators….
We officially received CD-3A approval this morning. Just a reminder of the scope included in the quest.
The MOLLER MIE requests authority to execute $9.14M in long lead procurements of critical path and near critical path items for which designs are complete:
1. Toroid Magnets ($3.41M)
* Upstream magnet conductor and coil fabrication with associated hardware
* Upstream collimators, blocker and two-bounce shield (tungsten)
* Downstream magnet coils and associated hardware
* Downstream collimators (tungsten)
* Downstream magnet enclosure
2. Magnet Power Supplies ($1.14M)
3. Beam Pipes and Bellows ($1.17M)
4. Liquid Hydrogen Target ($1.48M)
5. Moller Polarimeter Collimator ($0.02M)
6. Risk-Based Contingency ($1.92M)
Note that this grew from about $3M at our Director’s Review with both the DR and OPA reviews recommending expanding the scope of the request. We should all be thankful to the FPD, Bryan Foley, who presented to ESAAB and to Elizabeth and Paul at ONP who helped us navigate through this process with OPA and got Tim on board with this.
And thanks to the many students, postdocs, faculty and staff who did the hard work of getting the designs to a point where this request was a possibility. Now we need to spend north of $7M in the coming couple of months and on we go to CD-2/3 this fall.
Regards,
Jim
