[Moller_intdet] [EXTERNAL] Ring 5 prototype

Indeed – I started using 3D printing in the early 1990’s just to envision complex parts for the machine shop and that alone was worth every penny, though it was a LOT of pennies in those days.

So your equipment can support chopped carbon fiber reinforcement? I have a part for EIC silicon I am interested in prototyping and was looking around for someone who could perhaps print one at some point.

Hi Jim,

Yes, for next prototype we want it to be black and printed from radiation hard material.

This was printed with the material that was being used here already and should be considered a first assembly test. For that purpose this was ideal, since we were able to identify some issues
with the design that we need to address. Thanks to Wouter pushing the purchase of so much new equipment here, through the faculty no less, we should be in a position to turn out the next prototypes pretty rapidly, over the summer,
until we have something that works really well. It is very useful, even if we end up deciding to have it machined from aluminum in the end.

Very nice!
I am pretty sure production parts should be black to gobble up any photons that don’t totally internally reflect in the quartz, but very nice. Is that a nylon plastic? We do need to consider radiation hardness of these parts….we don’t want these to embrittle an become very fragile.

Hello,

Nafis and I put together the first full scale Ring 5 prototype this
afternoon (see attached figures). The entire mounting structure is 3D
printed and the quartz and light guide are installed, and we test fitted
the PMT.
The structural integrity is very good, even though we did not use a
particularly special (say carbon fiber infused) material. We will be
improving several things we noticed, which made the assembly cumbersome
and which would eventually improve the light tightening.

Regards,

Michael
