Folks,

We'll install target foils for our "gold experiment" in the Mott this week, so let's have our next meeting on Thursday, Sept. 18th at 1:30pm EST. I'll send a detailed reminder in advance.

I'd like next week's agenda to focus on our expectations this Fall to complete the work necessary for our first publication. As we prepare for the home-stretch I'd like to remind everyone just how much we've achieved in the past ~two years, and the many contributions you've made getting to this point:

    * Added Be plate in dump to suppress background => suppressed background ~3:1
    * Added cooled Cu dump to allow for high current operation => increased from 1uA to 80uA !!!
    * Replaced target ladder control for better reproducibility and control
    * Surveyed all of the detector and collimator geometry
    * Added additional pumping => pump down on foil swap from days to hours
    * Developed detailed Geant4 model of the detector from window to PMT => reproducing ~spectra fairly well
    * Overhauled DAQ providing energy and time event detection
    * Installed new BCM receiver => dynamic range to ~1nA for low current tests
    * Included Xavier's detailed calculations in codes and Geant4 simulation
    * Improved RF laser pulsing and synchronization at 31MHz rep rate
    * Measured systematics on beam energy, position, spot size => still to analyze
    * Measured and analyzed dry-run asymmetries on gold, silver and copper
    * Found good agreement with Michael's 2000 data
    * Summarized silver and copper foils that could help us prepare for a phase2 measurement
    * Plan in place to measure the thickness of the sibling foil for ~all foils we use in Mott
    * Assembled 14 gold foils (experiment set) with a thicknesses spanning 25x, from 0.04 - 1.0 um
    * Expect to start data taking during the Fall, and may complete during Winter shutdown (Dec-Jan)

With the end in sight! I would like to re-iterate and update the expectations I foresee for this Fall, so you may speak to them at the meeting next week.

    * Joe - Plan and lobby for measuring gold & systematics at 3 energies. Write the paper outline, propose measurements that need to be made, assign writing assignments. Work with Dan on analysis. Paper writing.

    * Riad - Complete DAQ (hardware and software) in fastest stable configuration, using readout upgrade or vetoing. Work w/ Dan to improve analyzer code. Paper writing.

    * Marty/Allena - Complete Geant4 simulator using Xavier's calculations, model spin dependent elastic multiple-scattering and particle detection; include refinements to improve agreement between model and measurement. Provide simulation result for comparison with measurements at 3 energies. Simulation contribution to paper writing.

    * Dan - Lead analysis and summary of Mott run data; coding/improvements analysis software; how we best reconcile data and Geant4 spectra.

    * Xavier/Charles - Define the theoretical input and provide calculations for the Geant4 model. Theory contribution to paper writing.

    * Mamun - Determine thickness and uncertainty of "sibling" target foils. Target thickness contribution to paper writing.

    * Charlie, Marcy, Matt, Tim - Continue to participate globally in planning, discussion, analysis, participate in writing the paper; alternatively, give some thought to issue/technical area which you "own", and contribute toward the paper.

-Joe
