I noticed that ImageJ is running on the Ops computers so I loaded a JPEG image from my desktop of an injector solenoid. I tried the Process=>Find Edges which seemingly works quite well. In fig. 1 all of the steel edges and particularly the text edges are revealed.
What a nice tool.
Next, I downloaded one of Mamun's FESEM images of the 0.75 um foils (fig. 2) and applied edge detection. While one can estimate foil thickness in pixels from fig. 2 it may turn out to be systematically more robust to do from fig. 3, e.g. once we learn how to use additional processing features...
Some of the interesting features to discuss and explain are ... smooth upper edge, the edge ~middle of foil, the lumpy bottom edge.
