The Surry Power Station will test its early warning siren system shortly
after 11 a.m. today (Wed., March 14).
A steady, three-minute tone will be sounded by 68 sirens across Newport
News, Williamsburg, Surry, James City, York and Isle of Wight during the
test. People at Jefferson Lab will likely hear the siren. This message
is to advise you of the test so you won't be alarmed.
Officials say these quarterly tests take place the second Wednesdays of
March, June, September and December.
In the event of an actual emergency, a Virginia Department of Emergency
Management official says four separate, three-minute sirens will sound,
each separated by a one-minute silent interval. The total emergency
notification time will last 15 minutes. In the case of emergency, people
are urged to listen to a local radio or TV station broadcasting
emergency information.
