I invite members of the Jefferson Lab community to a colloquium today
(Monday, Nov. 26) at 3 p.m. in the CEBAF Center auditorium. The program
will be The Virginia STEAM Academy: An Initiative for Growing the
Commonwealth's Next Generation of Scientists, Engineers and Technology
Professionals, and will be given by academy co-founders, Dr. Judy
Stewart and Mrs. Caroline Martin.

The Virginia Science Technology Engineering and Applied Mathematics
(STEAM) Academy is a proposed four-year residential program intended to
be a uniquely challenging experience for high-school students with
ability and potential in science, technology, engineering or math. It is
slated to accept its first freshman class in 2014. The program will be
designed to prepare students to enter higher education and then the
workplace with knowledge and skills in science and technology, so they
are prepared to contribute to U.S. competitiveness in a world economy.

The colloquium will be preceded by Jefferson Science
Associates/Jefferson Lab and the VA STEAM Academy signing a Memorandum
of Understanding. The MOU will help to establish a partnership that will
provide outstanding educational opportunities to STEAM faculty and students.

Jefferson Lab has long been a strong supporter for improving and
advancing education in the areas of science, technology and math.
Everyone with an interest in this initiative or in education outreach is
encouraged to attend the colloquium.

Hugh Montgomery
Director
Jefferson Lab
