I concur that the three cavities Jacob lists below are rejected due to leaks in the HV.

I'm happy to disposition REJECT, based on this conversation. Any objections?

Sounds like John V should be added as an authorized dispositioner to the LCLS2 NCRs so he can disposition them.

I have added Pansophy to the email with the request they add John Vennekate as an authorized dispositioner for the 3 LCLS2 NCRs listed below.

Exactly right, we actually have similar decisions for HE-CAV0040 and HE-CAV0128 by the Cavity Technical Board. Any of these cavities are still SLAC property and will be stored at Blue Crab until further notice.

Currently, we are using some of these rejected cavities for different purposes like the mockup setup of the purge system. Furthermore, we have salvaged – as instructed by SLAC – other rejected cavities at BC for spare parts. So, despite being marked as “rejected” for string assembly, these cavities are still being used within the framework of HE.

@Jacob Harris<mailto:jharris at jlab.org>

I’ll try to keep up with the VTA RF NCRs. Thanks for the reminder!

Cheers,

John V

I'm adding John V to distribution so he can assist.

Also, I would like to stress, parts that belong to HE that are rejected are NOT to be disposed of without specific direction from the project. "Reject" on an NCR should not be interpreted to mean throw/give away. All scrap materials are to be returned to SLAC unless otherwise agreed to by HE.

These three cavities should be stored at BC for eventual shipment to SLAC, unless they decide to try to retank them at some point (unlikely).

Thanks,
Katherine

Hi Katherine and John V,

Welcome to the tail end of an email conversation. We have 3 open NCRs on cavities in the LCLS-2 project that require a disposition. Since the parts are now considered part of HE project, we need your input.

Seems like someone from the HE project should tell us how to disposition them.

If they can't be used on HE project, is there any reason to keep them? If disposed as Reject, then they can be disposed, recycled, used for anything other than production work.

So all three cavities are unusable. What is the disposition? They can't be used as they are, but the path forward is not defined.

All,

You are listed as people who are authorized to disposition/close the 3 open NCRs on the LCLS2 project (links to 1988<https://pansophy.jlab.org/pansophy/Travelers/TRAVELER_FORM.cfm?project=L2PRD&area=L2PRD&system=NCR&page=1&SNType=SN&trav_id=L2PRD-NCR&maxpage=4&trav_revision=R10&trav_seq_num=1988&travstat=n&serialnum=CAV330&SN=CAV330>, 1989<https://pansophy.jlab.org/pansophy/Travelers/TRAVELER_FORM.cfm?project=L2PRD&area=L2PRD&system=NCR&page=1&SNType=SN&trav_id=L2PRD-NCR&maxpage=4&trav_revision=R10&trav_seq_num=1989&travstat=n&serialnum=CAV131&SN=CAV131>, and 1990<https://pansophy.jlab.org/pansophy/Travelers/TRAVELER_FORM.cfm?project=L2PRD&area=L2PRD&system=NCR&page=1&SNType=SN&trav_id=L2PRD-NCR&maxpage=4&trav_revision=R10&trav_seq_num=1990&travstat=n&serialnum=CAV135&SN=CAV135>). See Tiffany’s description below for the status. It seems they are all complete and ready to be closed by an authorized person. Any volunteers?

Subject: RE: Proj LCL2PRD: Open NCRs

In summary, as we were looking into cavities for the L2 remediation project, we did not catch that the CAVSNs listed in the currently open L2PRD NCR list below had damaged bellows from the L2PRD string assembly. The NCR was written on the string assembly traveler and tagged against the string SN; however, since the cavity was damaged and removed from the string, we needed an NCR to flag the cavity itself. We decided to write NCRs against the cavities and reference the original NCR # (see the description). These NCRs can be closed by copying the resolution from the original (referenced) NCR. No action is required for these cavities at this time.

I am not sure who can close those NCRs. I don’t have (nor should have I think) the permission to close these NCRs.

Hi Tiffany,

Open NCRs were discussed in today’s Quality Board Meeting and I recalled you and I talked about the 3 open ones you used for early cavity work, see below. Can you remind me what needs to happen to close these? I CCed Megan because I though there might be a request to move the data to LCLS-HE. Teams call me if it’s easier to explain without writing a short novel. 😊

Thanks,

Jacob

Cavity eight (CAV330) has a small hole in the He bellows cuff weld which was processed by the vendor. The leak was found after much of the He header piping was installed and welded. The cavity is not usable with this leak.

Leak from insulating vacuum space to Helium circuit at tuner end of cavity 3.

Leak is 5e-2 but no exact location determined yet.

He circuit leak checked on Jan 30. PICs removed 5 Feb. Alignment 6-8 Feb. Tuners roughed on 12 Feb. Tuners complete 15 Feb.

Damage to cavity 3 bellows likely happened while PICs were removed.
