Just FYI as a point of interest - I was just at LBNL and discussed their inventory software. They use EZOffice, a commercial software package. The really nice feature it has is that it comes with a phone app,
so they put QR codes on all hardware, and they can scan them with their phones to access the info. The really bad feature of the system is that it does not support building kit lists, so they have to build a kit list manually in Windchill every time they
build an assembly to link individual part serial numbers with an assembly serial number.
