Dear Collaborators,

We will have our usual meeting upstairs in the counting house at 3:15 pm today. Bluejeans link for remote participants: https://bluejeans.com/256205934

Around 1:11 on 2/24 the RHRS septum tripped and wouldn't ramp back up (log 3790689). Tech on-call had to make an access and the septum was repaired by 4:00 (thanks Andrew!). Production running was taken before and after the septum trip.

As the Moller measurement was being set up around 8:15 AM MCC sent 25 uA of unrastered beam directly onto the Ca48 target for ~40 seconds (log 3790942). Follow-up investigation details are given in log 3791039 along with suggested procedural changes to prevent these incidents in the future. The short version is that MCC wasn't using the easy button but were instead clicking the CW button for each hall individually. They pressed Hall A's button sending 25 uA to the hall instead of restoring the settings we were at when the beam tripped as the easy button would do. After some tests the target appears to be fine (log 3790894 and 3790937).

A separate incident occurred with the electron detector in the process of setting up the Moller measurement. While the operator was backing out of the Compton the FSD tripped as it should due to electron detector being in the beam. Wanting to continue providing beam to the other halls they masked the FSD. Forgetting that they had masked the FSD they sent tune beam for Moller to Hall A while the electron detector was still not backed out. A while later the electron detector was then backed out, but it did not fully reach the home switch, though it was in fact out. We did another 150 uA run and discovered it was not yet home fully and hit the button again to move it all the way home. Alex has determined that the electron detector has suffered some damage but this still needs to be assessed.

During the Moller measurement that is ongoing we have had many beam trips which has been slowing the measurement down so it will likely run a bit over the Day shift.

Outstanding Issues:

1. We need to establish better controls for protecting the target in coordination with MCC so unrastered beam does not strike our sensitive targets.
2. We need to establish a clear procedure for removing the electron detector while setting up Moller measurements with clear lines of responsibility.
3. We will be down tomorrow for about four hours starting at 8:30 AM for injector work. It may be possible to make an access at this time for things like checking the Q2 flow. We should discuss what we want to try to get in the hall for tomorrow morning if an access becomes possible.

Resolved Issues:

1. RHRS septum magnet is operational again.

Best,

Scott Barcus
(current Hall A Run Coordinator)
