[Rec_bike] The informal Fall Bike Commute Challenge Results

The “Commute Challenge” should take into consideration your commute distance, which could lead to an additional challenge “Cycling Fitness Challenge” to see who can log the most miles for the year or the season.  This would allow all JLab Bike Club members to participate, due to those who live beyond a reasonable commute distance.

Questions for all:
 •How would we go about recording all the mileage data?
 •Is anyone capable and willing to setup a website to log the data?
 •Should we setup common cycling routes with known distances and maps to choose from?  This would be a good thing for safety reasons also.  Your co-workers would know where   you went if you did not return, due to a possible accident or worst a fatal one.

Arne, I think it’s great that you and your co-workers are able to commute to work; someday I hope to do the same when I make the move closer to work.  I am curious though, what is the commute distance that Matt, Darrell, and you travel?

good idea but let's make it in the summer though so long distance commuters like me have some daylight for dodging cars on the highway.

Over on the accelerator side of the fence, three of us (Mat Wright, Darrell Spraggins, and myself) had a contest to see who could commute to work the most from the end of August up to the Winter Break. While we are not quite at the Winter Break, the final results have been tallied. Darrell and Mat tied with 78 commuting days out of 82 total days. One of the more interesting fact is that on only one occasion did one of us drive a car to work. The bulk of the missed days were Vacation, Travel or Sick. 

Anyway, I thought I'd share this with the bike email list. Perhaps we should hold a Spring Commute Challenge and open it up to the whole lab? Get JAG to throw in some nice prizes? How about May bike to work month?
