Subject: [Sbs] Please read: Milestones for off-program components

Dear SBS collaborators,

As discussed at yesterday's SBS collaboration weekly meeting, the
DOE review committee has asked for a list of milestones for the
off-program components (and for the scintillator Coordinate Detector).
We added two more off-program items (Timing Hodoscope and FastBus
DAQ). These need to be incorporated with the SBS program milestones and
reported to DOE by Jan. 1.

Here is a list of the projects, with a the names of people I'm asking
to take responsibility for assembling a list of milestones:

           Front tracker -- Evaristo Cisbani
           3He target -- Gordon Cates
           HCal-J -- Gregg Franklin
           GRINCH -- Todd Averett
Segmented Timing Hodoscope - John Annand
           ECal -- Bogdan Wojtsekowski
           Coordinate Detector -- Mahbub Khandaker
           FastBus DAQ -- Alex Camsonne

We will go over first drafts of these lists in the weekly meeting and/or
the CC meeting on Wednesday Nov. 20. If your name is given for a
component, please prepare a list of milestones and projected dates (in
consultation with the other people and other institutions involved) and
send a first draft to me by 5pm Tuesday. A simple text list in an email
would be fine.

The names assigned for each project are certainly NOT intended to
neglect the fact that other collaborators and other institutions are
playing important roles in the components. It was necessary to ask one
person to take responsibility for preparing each list. If the person
named is unable to undertake the task in this short time-frame or just
thinks someone else would a more appropriate choice, I ask that you find a
suitable alternate who will agree to undertake the responsibility and that
you let me know who.

The milestones need not describe details of the steps of the activity,
but should contain enough points of reference so it will be possible for
the committee to judge whether we are on schedule. Also, it should give
time estimates for any dates which are important for interfacing with the
SBS project and other off-project components. Bogdan suggests this
guideline: one milestone should be a completion date (a little before the
component is needed), another should be a short-term milestone which you
expect to reach by next August, or before, so the next DOE review can
judge progress. With one or two intermediate milestones, that should do
it.

    		Thanks,
    		Brian
