SHMS-HMS Users Group Newsletter #2

Following on the first SHMS-HMS users group newsletter, this
issue presents the latest topics relevant for those interested in Hall
C after the 12 GeV upgrade.

Lehman Review

In late September, JLab completed the DOE "Lehman Independent Project
Review 2009" of the 12 GeV Upgrade project. Howard Fenker and Paul
Brindza represented Hall C, describing completion of the design of the
SHMS, procurement of its magnets, and the design and construction of
the SHMS detectors. Both of the presentations, which represented the
efforts of many staff and users, were well prepared, presented and
received. The review results were positive for Hall C, with no
recommendations and only one comment related to procurement strategy
for one of the SHMS magnets.

SHMS Detector Systems Update

Progress on the SHMS wire chambers has continued, with work at Hampton
University to set up a prototype jig, to test stringing wires. This
has enabled the Hampton group to evaluate their construction methods
and procedures as well as materials to be used. The resulting lessons
learned should lead to less problems arising when the wire chamber
construction begins in earnest.

12 GeV Data Analysis Software

While there are still several details to be worked out, the current
plan is to convert from our fortran based analysis engine to a
root/C++ driven package similar to the Hall A analyzer. This will be
a significant effort, and work needs to begin as soon as possible so
that we can have a sufficiently complete package to allow for analysis
of existing HMS data prior to the beginning of the SHMS installation.
We hope to finalize plans and organize an analysis software working
group in the near future. In parallel, we will also be updating the
standard engine to include the SHMS, which will provide a backup
analysis package, as well as allowing for detailed comparisons. If you
have thoughts on the analysis software, or are interested in working
on the update, please contact any member of the SHMS-HMS Users Group
board.

PAC35

The next Program Advisory Committee meeting, PAC35, will take place at
JLab during the week of 25th January 2010. The call for proposals was
issued on 9th October, with a final deadline for proposal submission
set for the close of business on Monday 14th December 2009. The charge
to the PAC consists of three elements:-

i) Proposals and LOI which use the 'base' equipment after the 12 GeV
upgrade.

ii) Proposals and LOI which will require major new experimental
apparatus NOT included in the 'base' equipment after the upgrade.

iii) Review the execution of the plans to complete the 6 GeV physics
program between now and the shutdown of CEBAF before the upgrade.
