SHMS-HMS Users Group Newsletter #1
Last year, several Hall C users suggested the formation of a user
group for Hall C in the 12 GeV era. This users group, formally named
the "SHMS-HMS Users Group" was kicked off at the Hall C summer
workshop with the appointment of a 6 member user board. This board,
along with the Hall C 12 GeV manager (Howard Fenker) and the Hall
leader (Stephen Wood) met after the workshop to discuss the role of
the board and user group.
One of the topics of discussion was improving communication among
those interested in the upgraded Hall C. These communications will be
enhanced by issuing a periodic newsletter, of which this is the first
issue. This issue has been sent to the Hall C mailing list and the
SHMS-HMS Users Group list. If you are interested receiving future
issues of this newsletter and other 12 GeV communications, please
subscribe to "shms_users" if you are not already. Instructions for
subscribing can be found at

SHMS-HMS User's Group User Board:
Six Hall C users were appointed to form the initial User's Board of
the SHMS-HMS Users Group. Board members will serve for 3 years, but
the initial board consists of 4 members with shorter terms so that 2
members of the board will be replaced each year by user group
elections. The initial board and terms is:
John Arrington (johna at anl.gov), Argonne National Laboratory 3 years
Tanja Horn (hornt at cua.edu), The Catholic University of America 3 years
Garth Huber (huberg at uregina.ca), University of Regina 2 years
Peter Monaghan (peter at jlab.org), Hampton University 1 year
Ioana Niculescu (ioana at jlab.org), James Madison University 2 years
Charles Perdrisat (perdrisa at jlab.org), William and Mary 1 year
Hall C Summer Physics Workshop:
Hall C hosted an exciting summer workshop that included the topics of
nuclear structure, fundamental symmetries and hypernuclear physics.
The workshop ended with a session on the Hall C upgrade with talks by
Dave Gaskell, Howard Fenker, Garth Huber and Joerg Reinhold. The
talks covered the SHMS design and status, 12 GeV Experiments, and
potential new detectors for the SHMS. The slides from these talks are
available at http://www.jlab.org/Hall-C/talks/08_06_09/.
Hall C SHMS Detector Review:
On August 5, 2009, the "SHMS Detector Final Review" was held. This
"DOE" required review had presentations by the users and staff about
the SHMS detectors that are being built with 12 GeV DOE funds and NSF
MRI funds. The review committee report indicated that progress and
designs are appropriate and further that the collaborating detector
builders are working well as a team. This review allows the
collaborators to proceed with engineering details, procurement and
fabrication.
Upcoming Events:
The next Program Advisory Committee meeting, PAC35, will be the week of
January 25, 2010. While the call for proposal has not been issued,
this will be a "12 GeV" PAC, accepting new proposals for the upgraded
JLab.
The annual winter Hall C Users meeting is tentatively scheduled for
January 22 and 23 (Friday and Saturday). Spokespeople submitting
proposals to PAC35 will have the opportunity to "dry-run" their
presentations before the Hall C users.
