SHMS-HMS Users Group Newsletter
-------------------------------
April 2010
Assistance with Grant Applications
----------------------------------
If you are planning to submit a grant application which includes SHMS
development, please contact Steve Wood or Howard Fenker. Hall C is
willing to provide assistance with the grant application in the form
of drawings, comments on draft versions, letters of support, etc.
SHMS Software Working Group
---------------------------
Hamlet Mkrtchyan's group is working on a C++ based analysis code for
the SHMS shower counter. The software working group would like to
schedule a general software meeting sometime in late May or early
June; anyone interested in attending should contact John Arrington
directly to express their intent and/or preferences for dates.
SHMS Detectors Working Group
----------------------------
Progress continues on all of the detector systems for the
SHMS. Components are being sourced for the wire chambers. New lab
space for the wire chamber construction will soon be available on
Hampton University campus with the completion of a new research
building. JMU has ordered all the required components (scintillator
paddles, light-guides and photomultiplier tubes) for the hodoscope
construction.
Please send any photos or updates of the detector construction project
to Howard Fenker and Steve Wood for use in several upcoming 12 GeV
project meetings.
SHMS Project Update
-------------------
* Q1: vendor continues on schedule. A vendor-site design review is
scheduled for April.
* Horizontal Bender: contract negotiations are progressing.
* Q2,Q3,Dipole: bid packages were released in February (dipole) and
March (quads). Numerous vendors have expressed interest and are
preparing proposals.
* Magnet power supplies: bid evaluation complete.
* Shield House: Expect to bid the engineering contract soon.
* Cryogenic control / reservoirs (for magnets): vendor making good
progress. First article (for Hall-D) is due in May.
* A test cut of the SOS shield-house concrete using a circular saw
demonstrated that demolition can be done using conventional techniques.
Polarized Targets Working Group
-------------------------------
At the January Hall C collaboration meeting, the idea of forming a
topical group on polarized targets for the 12 GeV era was discussed.
Two experiments (A1n and d2n) which require a polarized 3He target,
have been approved or conditionally approved and the PAC will be
grading them this summer. Therefore plans for the implementation of a
polarized 3He target in Hall C need to be started soon. We have
identified two possible solutions for a Hall C polarized 3He target,
one would be to move/duplicate the Hall A target system to Hall C, the
other would be a very high pressure target system from UNH/XeMed. As
yet, no experiment has been proposed for 12 GeV which would require a
polarized hydrogen/deuterium target. However, we would like to gather
ideas of possible measurements in Hall C.
In order to start this process, Hall C jointly with Hall A is organizing
a two-day workshop on June 17 and 18. The first day will be dedicated to
the polarized 3He target R&D as well as review of the already approved
12 GeV experiments and presentation of potential new proposals. The
second day will be devoted to the R&D and possible experimental ideas for
the polarized hydrogen/deuterium target in Hall C/A.
A preliminary program will be soon posted on the Hall C webpage. There
will be enough time during the afternoon discussion sessions for people to
present a few slides on related topics relevant to the goal of the
workshop.
Anyone interested in participating should contact Patricia Solvignon.
