Assistance with Grant Applications
----------------------------------
If you are planning to submit a grant application which includes SHMS
development, please contact Steve Wood or Howard Fenker. Hall C is willing to
provide assistance with the grant application in the form of drawings, comments
on draft versions, letters of support, etc.
PAC35 Decisions
---------------
PAC35 was held last week, Jan 25-29. Twelve new proposals came before the
Program Advisory Committee which was asked to select proposals to be included
in the top half of the priority list for the first 5 years of 12 GeV operation.
Among these proposals were 4 Hall C proposals. Three of the proposals,
PR-10-002, measurement of F2 at large x, PR-10-003, deuteron
electro-disintegration, and PR-10-008, the nuclear dependence of F2 in light
nuclei were approved. PR-10-012, precision measurements of structure functions
at low x, was deferred.
One Hall-C letter of intent, LOI-10-007, neutron properties in the nuclear
medium was approved, which is encouragement to return with a full proposal.
PAC35 also graded previously approved proposals in the "Transverse structure of
the hadrons" (form factors) category. E12-06-101, pion form factor, was given
a PAC rating of "A" and awarded the requested time of 52 days. E12-09-006,
neutron electric form factor, remains approved, but was not graded or assigned
time due to the polarimeter changes in the update. More information will be
available in the PAC report when that is released.
SHMS Software Working Group
---------------------------
There is currently no data analysis code which includes the SHMS. At the
January Hall C workshop, there was a discussion on a new c++/Root analysis code
based upon the Hall A/Podd c++ framework, as well as updating the existing
Fortran engine. There was a general consensus to proceed on both fronts. The
c++ effort will clearly take more effort, and will begin first.
At its January 22 meeting, the SHMS-HMS User's Board formally created a
Software Working Group. John Arrington will coordinate the activites of the
working group and report on its progress to the User's Board. Working group
information will posted on the Hall C Wiki:
https://hallcweb.jlab.org/wiki/
Gabriel Niculescu has offered to go through the existing Hall C analyzer,
documenting what is there, determining if any parts are obsolete, and to
evaluate what may be awkward or easy to adapt into the c++ framework. After
this evaluation is complete, a meeting of the Software Working Group is planned
to discuss options and delegate tasks. A good time for this meeting might be
before or after the Exclusive Reactions Workshop, May 18-21.
If you are interested in contributing to the next generation HMS+SHMS analysis
code, we urge you to contact John Arrington (johna at anl.gov) and make plans to
attend this meeting.
SHMS Detectors Working Group
----------------------------
The Detectors Working Group met at JLab on the afternoon of January 21 to
present their progress reports on SHMS detector construction. The
presentations are available at:

SHMS Project Update
-------------------
* Q1: vendor is progressing on schedule.
* Horizontal Bender: contract negotiations still in progress.
* Q2,Q3,Dipole: bid packages are being restructured for reissue.
* Magnet power supplies: bid evaluation stage.
* Shield House: Expect to bid the engineering contract soon.
* Cryogenic control / reservoirs (for magnets) -- contract awarded.
* A test cut of SOS concrete, to aid in planning its removal, is scheduled for
early February. The job will take about 3 days.
Upcoming Events
---------------
Exclusive Reactions Workshop @ JLab - May 18-21.
Software Working Group Meeting - TBA, but likely May 17 or May 22.
Summer Hall C Workshop - TBA, but likely late August or early September.
This workshop is expected to be 12 GeV centric.
Detector Working Group Meeting - TBA, but likely the day prior to the Summer
Workshop.
