Subject: [EXTERNAL] PPU weekly update

The PPU project office has processed 12 change requests this month. A major update is an increase in ORNL overhead rates resulting in a cost increase of ~ $0.8M. Also input from NScD operations divisions was solicited for updating the contingency buy down/spares plan.

In the superconducting RF area, the last 6 (of 30) cavities were shipped from the vendor in Germany this week. This is a major milestone that could have been severely affected by COVID, but we have managed with a quite acceptable delay. A fourth He jacketed cavity is undergoing preparation at JLab, and when complete the initial string assembly will begin. In the RF area the first article circulator was shipped and is being prepared for testing at SNS. This was a procurement we have been following closely, and if the hardware performs well, this opens the door to our use of a US vendor moving forward in this area. In the ring area final preparations are in place for the preliminary design review of the beam power limiting system next week. Also the injection dump window view-screen coating has been finalized. A major effort in the target systems is in tying down the schedules for process systems upgrades which are needed to be able to coordinate with the operations plans during major outages in 2022-2023. Action items from the final design review of the moderator cryogenic system have mostly been addressed and will be completed soon. The klystron gallery construction work is making good progress, and we are still projecting an end date of March 31. The wall around existing equipment racks is being removed to facilitate work in that area.

Thanks as usual to everyone for the progress across the board. We are starting to see some important milestones being checked off and also are seeing the importance of close coordination in planning with operations. Have a great weekend – jg
