As the Nation faces unprecedented challenges with the COVID-19 pandemic, your continued commitment to fulfilling our missions and for your attention to doing so safely is paramount. Expertise from across ORNL is being organized and applied to the fight against
COVID-19, with work under way or planned in supercomputing, neutron science, protein and genomic studies, epidemiological modeling, and advanced manufacturing. As the world leading center for neutron scattering science and innovation, ORNL has an important
role to play in providing unique information about COVID-19 from neutron scattering, that could help in efforts to fight the disease.

Researchers from Neutron Sciences Directorate are collaborating with colleagues from across ORNL, other DOE National Laboratories and academia to prepare for neutron scattering studies into the COVID-19 virus. This research is being spearheaded by our Center
for Structural and Molecular Biology. None of the research involves work with real viruses, but rather small synthetic parts that cannot cause disease. Some of the research will require the two protein crystallography beamlines at HFIR and SNS to visualize
hydrogen atoms in COVID-19 proteases, protein molecules that are essential for the life cycle of the virus. Determining where the hydrogen atoms are in these proteases can only be done using neutrons, and will aid in the design of new therapeutics and diagnostics
against the disease. The unique sensitivity of neutrons to hydrogen and its isotope deuterium can also provide unique insights into the structure and function of other components of the virus using the three small-angle neutron scattering instruments at HFIR
and SNS. This work can shed light on how virus molecules work together as engines that make new virus particles to feed infection. This work, and work on other SNS and HFR instruments, has the potential to contribute new knowledge that can help guide design
of effective antiviral agents that prevent viral replication.

We are also reaching out to other researchers involved in the fight against COVID-19. A special call for proposals will be made today to the National research community to provide rapid remote access to SNS and HFIR. We have staff with expertise in structural
biology, biophysics, chemistry, and nanoscale materials science and engineering to support experiments that could help develop physical, chemical and environmental controls to viral transmission, infection and replication, and guide in the development of new
diagnostics and therapeutics of disease. A copy of the call for proposals is below.

I want you to know that I sincerely appreciate your commitment and dedication in working towards preparing the SNS and HFIR for this critical mission. Many of you have learned new ways to support the mission remotely, while others have continued to come onsite
to support essential activities. We all have an important role to play in this fight. It will take all of us working together to defeat COVID-19, both through science contributions as well as social distancing. As the virus continues to spread in our community,
it is increasingly important that each of us remain extremely mindful of how our behaviors may have a direct bearing on others’ safety. All of us who represent ORNL have a particular duty to model the type of responsible behavior that science tells us can
stop the spread of COVID-19, both at work and at home.

As always, the safety of our staff and our community is our top priority. Please remain focused on our critical mission, but committed to following all of the COVID-19 safety guidelines both at home and while working onsite. We are faced with a temporary
way of doing work that brings additional challenges and restrictions. It is imperative we focus on the Safe Conduct of Research principles, specifically maintaining a questioning attitude, raising concerns, and evaluating the hazards for every task, every
time. I am confident we can add significant contributions to this challenge, but want to ensure we do so while keeping our staff safe.
