Emmy Trewartha (JLab), "Machine Learning Action Parameters for Lattice QCD"

Abstract:

High-precision lattice QCD calculations provide important insights into a number of aspects of the standard model. These calculations are extremely computationally demanding, and current algorithms suffer well-known scaling issues as the continuum limit is approached.

A number of proposed methods to circumvent this require acting at multiple length scales simultaneously. This naturally results in a parameter matching problem for actions defined at different scales. The applicability of neural networks to this task is investigated, and found to be superior to current approaches. The complex structure of lattice QCD gauge fields is found to require the introduction of custom neural network layers and provide opportunities for further improvement.
