Abstract: A number of different decompositions for the proton mass have been proposed in the literature. All of them can be expressed as matrix elements of operators related to the Energy-Momentum Tensor (EMT) in quantum chromodynamics. Exploiting the simpler case of an electron in QED, we review the formalism of the renormalization for the separate lepton and gauge-field operators that contribute to the total EMT. Once we have established the formalism, we review and revisit the different decompositions by paying special attention to the connection between the different sum rules. We discuss the scheme dependence of the proton-mass decompositions, and we present numerical results for the various terms up to the third order in the strong coupling. We also elaborate on a possible connection between the trace anomaly and the time component of the EMT, that is realized when forward matrix elements are considered.
