Dear all,
On Wednesday, August 21st, 2024 at 1pm EDT, we will have a cake seminar given by Daniel Adamiak of JLab in CC F224/225. Please see below for the title and abstract.
Cake Seminar: Wednesday, August 21st, 2024 at 1pm EDT
Speaker: Daniel Adamiak (JLab)
Title: The Resolution of Proton Imaging
Abstract: One of the goals of modern nuclear physics is to capture a picture of the inside of a proton. The distribution of the positions and momenta of quarks inside the proton are described through quantum correlation functions (QCFs). These QCFs cannot be directly measured but inferred through modeling and fitting to data from particle collider experiments. Our confidence and uncertainty in these QCFs are then reported via uncertainty bands, which are given by the distribution of free parameters that enter the models of the QCFs. What these uncertainty bands obscure is how much each source of uncertainty contributes to final posterior uncertainty. These sources of uncertainty are the uncertainty of the data, the distribution of the data, and the inherent model uncertainty. In this talk, I will introduce the concept of resolutions of the QCFs, how they separate these different uncertainty sources, and why these resolutions are a useful diagnostic tool for understanding how precise our picture of the proton is.
See you on Wednesday.
Best regards,
Caroline, Joe, Zheng-Yang & Gloria
