Title: Nuclear suppression of hadron production from fully coherent energy loss
Abstract: High-energy proton–nucleus (pA) collisions provide an intriguing opportunity for disentangling various cold nuclear matter effects on hadron production. Multiple rescatterings in the cold nuclear medium induce soft gluon radiation with long formation times, leading to the modification of hadron production rates via fully coherent energy loss (FCEL). Medium-induced FCEL has proven to be essential for explaining the nuclear suppression of heavy-flavor mesons, including quarkonium, in pA collisions in a wide kinematic range of energies. Understanding the qualitative and quantitative role of FCEL in the quenching of hadron production over a broad kinematic range is a crucial step before introducing other nuclear effects such as nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs). This talk will begin with a review of the FCEL effect, highlighting the role of the induced single-gluon radiation spectrum in controlling the FCEL effect. We will present theoretical predictions based on FCEL and compare them with experimental data on light hadron and heavy-flavor (D-meson, J/ψ) production in pA collisions. In addition, we will discuss recent results for the induced single-gluon radiation spectrum beyond leading-logarithmic accuracy, which enhance the predictive power of FCEL in future phenomenological studies. We will also discuss the interplay between FCEL and nPDF effects in nuclear suppression of hadron production.
