Abstract: Form factors of the energy-momentum tensor—called gravitational form factors—are often interpreted as providing access to stresses (such as pressures and shears) inside
hadrons. In particular, Fourier transforms of the form factors D and cbar are usually taken to provide the stress distributions. This interpretation has been questioned by some, especially when applied to quantum-mechanical systems in general. I revisit the
question, and argue that it is indeed appropriate to interpret these quantities as stress distributions. I consider the hydrogen atom as a familiar example, to avoid any complications from relativity or field theory. I briefly recall what the stress tensor
means in classical continuum systems, obtain the gravitational form factors and their Fourier transforms for the hydrogen ground state, and then use the pilot wave interpretation of quantum mechanics to build a bridge between these. A striking result is that
the cbar form factor—rather than D—tells us what the force law binding the system is.
