Dear Colleagues:

Jefferson Lab's United Way campaign kicks-off today, Oct. 8; and i hope 
that you will join me and lab leadership in supporting this worthwhile 
effort. As part of today's kick-off, we are holding our annual 
fund-raiser picnic, from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. in Quark Cafe. Hot dogs, 
hamburgers, soda and chips will be sold to raise money for the United 
Way and will be served by lab senior management. These food items are 
being generously donated by our Quark Cafe contractor, Eurest.

Quark Cafe will be open with a limited sidedish menu, salad and soup 
bar, and self-serve deli items for regular purchase.

We also will be selling $1 raffle tickets during the picnic for a chance 
to win one of two iPads.

All proceeds from the ticket sales, as well as all food donations, will 
go to the United Way. The winning raffle tickets will be announced at 
the JAG Oktoberfest on Oct. 24.

are available at the front desks of the SSC, ARC, MCC, and CEBAF center. 
All forms should be returned to Joshua Cameron in Human Resources by 
Oct. 24.

It's once again time to show support for our communities by donating to 
the annual United Way of the Virginia Peninsula campaign. Your 
contributions to the United Way go a long way toward providing critical 
services and supplies to those in our community who are in need. 
After-school programs, affordable daycare, transportation for the 
elderly, hospice care, job training for the disabled and even food and 
shelter are just some of the benefits that result from your donations.

The City of Newport News has been very kind to Jefferson Lab over the 
years, providing everything from free emergency services to buildings 
and leasing-back at cost to space in the Applied Research Center 
building to enthusiastic support at the state and national levels for 
the lab's scientific endeavors. A generous contribution by all of us at 
the lab is one way of giving back to a community that has been so good 
to us, while also setting an example for others to follow.

I know many of your friends and family have been assisted by United Way 
- mine certainly have. Please join me, this year's fund raising 
chairman, in making this our biggest and best campaign ever for United Way.
