October 9 Briefs Excerpts:

CNI Maintenance Period Scheduled for Oct. 15
The CNI group has scheduled a maintenance period for 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15. During this time, there will be a brief Internet outage to test the lab's backup internet connection. All Management and Information Systems (MIS) applications will be unavailable while server operating system (OS) patches are applied. The web servers eic, logbooks and cebaf will be offline briefly for a certificate update. Linux and Windows patches will be released to all desktop systems, and Firefox, Thunderbird, Java and Adobe Flash will also be updated on all Windows Systems. Additionally, jlabl3 and jlabl4 will be replaced with systems running a Red Hat Enterprise Linux Version 6 (RHEL) 64-bit OS. Finally, the CNI group will begin sending out email to all staff and users whose home directory permissions allow other staff or users access to their home directories. If you get such an email, take the time to read it and follow the instructions. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, contact the IT Division Helpdesk at x7155.

Copying and Printing Conservation of Resources
Jefferson Lab has printed and copied more documents in the last month than prior months. This is straining printing/copying resources during a time of lean budgets. Everyone is asked to conserve resources and to consider printing or copying only what is essential for your work. If you feel that you do need to print something, consider saving resources with the following tips:
- Be sure to use duplex (two-sided printing, set as default);
- Print multiple pages on a single sheet of paper (available in the layout section of your print dialog);
- Make only black & white (B&W) prints/copies (set as default for printing); and
- Consider scan-to-email documents as PDFs instead of making paper copies.

Reminder: Jefferson Lab’s Energy Conservation Policy
Jefferson Lab’s Energy Conservation Policy is designed to help determine the safest and most cost-effective ways of using and managing resources. In the current budget environment, it is very important that all members of the Jefferson Lab community be aware of and comply with this policy and seek new ways to reduce consumption of electricity, water and other resources. The policy prohibits the use of personal electrical appliances in office and work areas. If you have any questions about the policy or a request for personal appliance use, contact Bill Mooney, x5461 or mooney at jlab.org.

Flu Vaccine Available
Occupational Medicine is now taking appointments from Jefferson Lab staff for Influenza vaccinations. If you would like to be vaccinated, contact Occupational Medicine, x7539, to schedule an appointment. Remember that for 15 minutes after vaccination, you should remain at Jefferson Lab, in the presence of other people and avoid safety-sensitive activities, including driving.

BEAMS Seeks Volunteers for 15-Minute Role Model Visits
Jefferson Lab’s 5th grade Becoming Enthusiastic About Math and Science (BEAMS) program kicks off this month. An important part of the BEAMS experience is Role Model Visits; and Science Education is seeking lab volunteers to provide these 15-minute Role Model Visits for the students. During these informal visits, volunteers talk about their jobs, their education or job training, how they wound up at Jefferson Lab, and the aspects of their jobs that they most enjoy, etc. For more information on the visits and volunteering, see the full announcement.

Hand Sanitizer for Your Workspace
To minimize the spread of flu this season, Jefferson Lab has bottles of hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes for distribution to staff and users for disinfecting hands and common-use workplace surfaces, such as phones and keyboards. These items can be picked up by visiting Freestock in Bldg. 90, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Friday. If you have any questions, call x6297 or x7225.

Tour Through TEDF on Oct. 16
The Technology and Engineering Development Facility is a state-of the-art facility for superconducting radiofrequency (SRF), cryogenics and related science and engineering technologies. The TEDF will be open 10 a.m.-noon on Wednesday, Oct. 16, for staff and users to take self-directed tours. The event will feature posters and displays, and staff experts will be on hand to provide information and answer questions.

Don't Forget to Complete Your Appraisal Self-Assessment by Oct. 14
Employees have until Oct. 14 to complete and forward their self-assessments to their supervisors. For more details on commonly asked questions pertaining to the performance review and promotion process, visit the Performance Appraisal web page. In the event you are away from the lab and need to access your performance appraisal, you may do so by obtaining a personal identification number from Brandye Rogers (x5959), April Sessoms (x7663), Cassandra Andrews (x7068) or Bruce Ullman (x7170). United Way Campaign Underway
The United Way annual fundraising campaign at Jefferson Lab continues. Hard copies of the donation form are available at the Support Service Center and CEBAF Center reception desks. They may also be picked up at the United Way Raffle ticket sales table in the CEBAF Center lobby daily during lunch. Send or deliver completed forms to Joshua Cameron in CEBAF Center, Room B214, Mail Stop 12-B, by Friday, Nov. 1. Questions may be directed to Joshua Cameron, x7628.

Last Chance to Register for 2013 Fall Golf Outing
The Jefferson Lab 2013 Fall Golf Outing will be held on Friday, Oct. 18, at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club (Green Course) in Williamsburg, Va. Register, no later than Friday, Oct. 11.
