Jefferson Lab's spam and virus filter solution was replaced with a new system called WatchGuard on Tuesday evening of this week. This system identifies spam by a method called heuristic analysis, which compares the characteristics of each incoming email to those from emails containing viruses or that have been identified as spam. Suspicious emails are placed in a quarantine, where they may be reviewed by the intended recipient prior to deletion or release.

For Watchguard to most effectively identify emails for quarantine, it must be exposed to identified spam emails that Jefferson Lab addresses typically receive. This "training" process was begun before the cutover to the Watchguard system, but further training is needed. Please forward any spam you receive to spam at jlab.org to assist in the training process. The amount of spam actually received by Jefferson Lab staff and users will decrease as more spam is identified and sent to the above address.

For more information on WatchGuard, how to add filters, and how to view your quarantined emails, see https://cc.jlab.org/WatchGuard

If you have any questions or concerns that are not answered on the webpage, contact the IT Division Helpdesk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.
