[b1_ana] ReadyTalk

Hi Patricia,

Sorry you could not access the desktop the last time. Here are
instructions on how to do it.

At JLab, open a tunneling ssh session on any OS:

- Linux, open an X terminal or similar,

  ssh -L 5927:twist.phys.virginia.edu:5927 sane at twist.phys.virginia.edu

and login with vnc4Sane. Then you can run the viewer with

  vncviewer -shared localhost:5927 &

login with the same password. You are done.

To use a Java enabled browser instead of the vncviewer, tunnel with
5827, enter localhost:5827 in the address bar.

- Windows, you need the "putty" terminal emulator, available on all JLab
MS Windows desktops. Follow the instructions on our wiki
https://hallcweb.jlab.org/wiki/index.php/Putty_Howto

- Mac OS-X, set up an ssh tunnel as above for Linux, view with Chicken
of the VNC
http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/

Not at JLab:

No tunnels needed. Just check that the "Shared" option is selected and
connect with
viewers to twist.phys.virginia.edu:5927
browsers to twist.phys.virginia.edu:5827 (Java required)

Very detailed instructions here:
https://hallcweb.jlab.org/wiki/index.php/Teleconference#Establishing_a_VNC_connection

I have tested all the above methods, except Mac's Poulet de la VN Mer,
but I had no trouble starting, on the Mac, a remote viewer on twist
itself after tunneling to twist as above, with the -XC options added.
But tunneling did not seem to work for Safari, etc. It may be a Mac
limitation.

The desktop itself is very easy to use:
just click with the right mouse button on any open location on the
desktop, and a huge menu of apps opens. There are four virtual desktops,
choose at bottom left.

I encourage all to try it before the next meeting. I really don't think
we would need to use another service.

Cheers,

Oscar
