Dear BDXers,
this week the lab leadership (Stuart and David) gave the 'official' green light to the BDX experiment to run in parallel to the Moeller experiment (scheduled to start in Sept 2026)!
The experimental configuration foresees one (or two, depending on the cost) drilled shafts of about 10' diameter (and 30' deep) where we can lower the BDX detector with minimal changes to the design proposed to the PAC (and recently re-approved in the jeopardy process). The shielding, consisting of a ~2m lead wall, will be placed in the BD vault between the downstream end of the BD and the vault's concrete upstream wall, with minimal interference with Hall-A ops.
The lab management committed to procuring CsI(Tl) crystals from BaBar and involving the SLAC HPS group in BDX. It also started a negotiation with PANDA/FAIR to get 3-4k PANDA crystals and have Mainz/Giessen on board.
Regarding support for the experiment, Hall-B will provide the ~1000ch fADC, crates, VTPs, and cables.
FE electronics (preamps and bias), sipms, cables, mechanics, and vetoes will remain on BDX Collaboration.
Facility is already working on a cost estimate: unless it will be prohibitive, the drilled shaft solution (proposed by Facility) seems to be the final option.
Otherwise, an array of pipes (similar to BDX-MINI) could be the backup solution.
More details about the possible timeline and the BDX work plan discussion at the bi-weekly BDX meeting on Tuesday, October 3.
To celebrate the good news we shall organize a BDX kick-off party sometime at Jlab (during the November CLAS Coll meeting?): another item for Tuesday's agenda!
Talk to you soon!
Cheers
Marco
