Reviewers' comments:
Reviewer #1: The paper "Design, Construction, and Performance of the GEM based Radial Time Projection Chamber for the BONuS12 Experiment with CLAS12" is very neat and very detailed, well written, with good drawings and pictures. It describes an original detector, characterized by an axial magnetic field and a radial electric field, which is not the usual configuration of a Time Projection Chamber (TPC), where usually the electric field is parallel to the magnetic field. This characteristics imply a strong deviation of the drifting electrons due to the Lorentz force and complicates the reconstruction.
In Fig.2 and lines 202 and 221, the up stream and down stream field cages should be rather named field shapers. This also holds for Fig. 9 caption and line 718.
Line 348, it is not clear what is meant by a 'capacitance method' to cut the foil.
Line 546, 20 W of energy should be replaced by 20 W of power.
The description of the reconstruction software is the weak point of the paper. The fact that the conversion time to radius is given by Eq. (1) demonstrated by simulations is not very satisfactory (lines 692 and following). The same for Eq.(2). These formulae should be given by equations of mechanics and electrostatics.
The momentum correction for energy loss is also a bit puzzling. Fig. 22 shows that this correction can be quite large, and the parameters a_0 and a_1 of the correction formula Eq.(3) are ambiguous : the exponentials are exp(-5) and exp(-6) or exp (-0.5) and exp(-0.6) ?
Line 880 to 884 should be checked or more explicit : 'non-perfect control over running conditions'.
Despite these minor remarks or questions, this paper is definitely of high quality and should be accepted for publication in NIM A.
Reviewer #2: Dear Authors,
This article is written in a well-understandable English. The article deals with the development, the commissioning, and characterization of a radial TPC based on GEM technology. A detailed description of the instrument (detectors, mechanics and electronics) is made.
This article will be a reference for the BONuS12 experiment in the future publications.
A very minor revision of this paper has to be done, and the comments and corrections listed below have to be considered before publication.
General remarks and writing comments:
- The numerous uses of the third pronoun like "we" are not clearly specified in the style guide's recommendations of NIMA which are the same as APS for Physics (https://cdn.journals.aps.org/files/styleguide-pr.pdf<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__cdn.journals.aps.org_files_styleguide-2Dpr.pdf&d=DwMFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=CJm6DhRcoX04MjTsHQ1rOaz5dKcjlcAdQlzenFZzaP4&m=862tkuIEZq-EAkqciJ_Y4zILeEqlXgcd2dRnNDmSZSYqyXwbR4Om8kFx0zCVJB6i&s=xbfsoozaWBflhohw4wYwmYG3xWbduNkuUwrrQueX-GY&e=>). But usually, in Academic articles, it should stay low. In section 4.8, the pronoun "we" is too much used.
- Always put a space between the numbers and the units (when it is a letter) i.e. in L. 300 (400 V)
Corrections:
- L. 89: a period is missing at the end of the sentence.
- L. 223: you may replace the "drift gas" by the "RTPC gas"
- L. 262: "Fig. 7 shows examples of GEM foils considered to pass (top) or to fail (bottom) the optical inspection."
- L. 298: "using another puller assembly." If this is the case, adding "another" will help the understanding of the assembly step.
- L. 340: One word "with" needs to be removed.
- L. 385: "Finally, the cathode assembly was inserted into the detector in consecutive small steps as shown in Fig. 13."
- L. 445: for CO2, please use CO$_2$.
- L. 465: ...the target was emptied and refilled three times...
- Fig. 15 and L. 1166 : replace MicroMEGAS by the Micromegas.
- L. 495: Hitachi micro-coaxial cables. Please give a manufacturer reference code.
- L. 504: Hitachi MEC8 cables: the cables are from Hitachi, but the MEC8 connector is from Samtec. No MEC8 connector is present on this cable. Here, this is not clear. Remove MEC8 or be more specific.
- L. 509: Each FEU is composed of eight Samtec MEC8 input connectors....
- L. 540-542: "...DREAM chip inputs is estimated and subtracted on a per-chip basis, and last, the signal is zero suppressed on a per-channel basis." Both are considered here as adjectives.
- L. 545: "FEUs are powered by a 5 V source. Each FEU consumes 20 W."
- L. 549: "A continuous flow of air is necessary to cool the FEUs at room temperature within the crates."
- L. 659: "However, real tracks might be falsely separated..."
- L. 676: "... in three dimensions is to..."
- L. 723: "... the first-order approach...". As it is considered here as an adjective.
- L. 730: "... the z-axis can be ignored as a good approximation, but the energy loss of the charged particle ..."
- L. 733: "The helix fitter used is a modified form..."
- L. 851 and 852: Please be specific with parameters A, B and C. For instance: a_t(z) = A_t + B_t z^2 + C_t z^4 and a_\phi(z) = A_\phit + B_\phi z^2 + C_\phi z^4
- L. 853: "... the results for the drift time $t$ and the angle $\theta_L$, respectively."
- L. 861: "Like for the drift region, the steps in the same z-positions are repeated and fitted these simulated data results with similar second-order polynomials in z² and the corresponding coefficients A, B, and C were extracted."
- In Fig. 24, 25, 26 & 27: please, precise in the legends that "Data" corresponds to "MC data".
- Fig. 31, 32 & 33 could be optimized with higher quality.
- L. 983: "Additionally, the right plot in this figure shows..."
- L. 1029: "overpressure"
- L. 1031: "photomultiplier". Please don't hyphenate words unnecessarily.
- L. 1034: "... a set of venting pumps was installed upstream of the detector..."
- L. 1036: "... to remove the leaking helium and discharge it outside Hall B."
- L. 1051: "... different layers oof the HV system to protec...". Remove "in order to" to avoid wordiness.
- L. 1063: Remove space in "i.e." expression.
- L. 1086: "... was sent through the target cell. Then, the beam..."
- L. 1105: "... suppressing single-hit noise." As it is considered here as an adjective.
- L. 1120: "... was changed frequently while maintaining the purity of each gas type."
- L. 1139: "At this point, the D_2..."
- L. 1149: "... high-rate ..."
- L. 1153: "... high-energy ..."
Comments: Be more specific with the numbers, see below:
- L. 36: How much does this design reduce the inactive area of the RTPC?
- L. 89: Please, give the thickness of the thin cylindrical cathode foil.
- L. 117: Please give the thickness of the aluminized layer?
- Fig. 3: You should modify this figure to add the numbers corresponding to the description in the text (from L. 137 to L. 153).
- Tab. 1: In caption: add a space between "dimensions" and the reference [7].
- L. 189: how much space for isolation? Please specify.
- L. 197: you could add "(see Fig. 2)." at the end of the sentence.
- L. 568: add "... view of RTPC at 1.7 T magnetic field."
- Fig. 27: why the MC data for z=10 cm are inconsistent with the fitting curve compared to the other MC data points?
Best regards,
The reviewer
