B-Team Colleagues,
It has become apparent that we can do a better job of verifying a good
machine setup after any SAD or extended accelerator down period. Right
now, Operations relies mainly on the successful execution of the Optics
Restoration and Finalization Procedure (ORFP) to define what a "good"
setup is. My concern is that there are other important--or what I'll
call "expert" machine parameters--not captured in the ORFP that can
affect the final outcome. The process of "setting up" the machine
usually takes several shifts and progresses from a rough spin up to a
final tune of the beam transport and optics. This extended process,
coupled with the range of experience for both the Ops and on-call staff,
can result in a less than desirable setup that can sometimes come back
and bite us days later.
I ask the B-Team for help with this issue, first by performing a
thorough review and update of the ORFP procedure, and second, by
developing a final verification process for checking the beam transport,
machine parameters and optics setup. I believe it is important that
Optics On-call be an integral part of the final "blessing" of the
machine setup to provide an overall check and address any of the subtle
expert issues that can impact beam transport.
Noel
