Hi folks,
Here is the email from Chris about the AI Brainstorm that was discussed
at the CASA coffee meeting this morning. Please think about possible
useful applications of AI and machine learning that would be suitable
components for future FOAs, and contact Chris if you have any questions
or would like to participate. Cheers!
-Todd

Hi all,
Earlier this year the DOE released several Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and data analytics in quick succession. Preparing an FOA proposal is a non-trivial task. While the Accelerator Division was able to submit one or two, being prepared with proposal ideas would position us better to respond to future funding solicitations. In 2019 I gave a Division Seminar broadly describing AI applications in accelerator physics. This
in turn led to a follow up meeting about specific ideas we could pursue at Jefferson Lab. Several of those ideas were incorporated into a 2020 FOA proposal which received funding ($1.35M over 3 years). All that to say, it would be beneficial to have another similar brainstorming session given the DOE's commitment to funding AI projects and build expertise in the national laboratories.
The purpose of this message is to get a feel for interest in a possible afternoon event early this fall (after Labor Day). In particular, we would expect to have "lightning talks" (5-8 minutes) from colleagues across various groups. Some will provide brief status reports on currently funded projects, but we're most interested in identifying talks from people with new ideas for where we can apply AI at the lab. Several such ideas came up earlier this year when the FOAs were released, and we
suspect there are many more out there. These ideas can be detailed descriptions of a project, or they can be as simple as "I'd really like a system that could do Y given data X that I have". Connecting interested colleagues and getting feedback is a great way to sharpen potential proposal ideas.
We're asking that you pass this along to your group and/or colleagues that you believe would be interested in participating. Please respond by July 28 if you would like to present a talk. To be clear, you are not committing to anything at this point - we simply would like to gauge interest.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Chris, Adam, Lasitha
