Dear colleagues,

Here is more in the hazardous work planning situation from leadership. It would b we best to participate in the 130 ops weekly mentioned below today if you work on potentially hazardous equipment.

Please see below a memo related to High Hazard Work over Memorial Day Weekend and going forward.
There will likely be more information distributed after this will be discussed at Director’s Council today, and Steve Hoey may have more details at 1:30 MCC meeting.

Subject: High Hazard Work over Memorial Day Weekend and going forward

Leadership Team,

See attached. The Office of Science has issued a directive that “effective immediately, high risk/high consequence work shall only be performed at an SC Laboratory when the Laboratory’s ability to perform that work, fully support the activity, and respond to a potential unplanned event is consistent with the capabilities available on a typical midweek day shift. If high risk/high consequence work is normally scheduled to be performed outside of the normal workday, that work either needs to be rescheduled or the full complement of necessary resources must be on site and able to perform and support that work. This encompasses efforts from planning to recovery as well as any necessary laboratory and federal oversight.” If you remember, the SLAC event occurred during the holiday shutdown, Dec 27th. This is in line with our current expectations for work preparation and execution but will require coordination with the site office at some level.

The Memorial Day holiday is coming up so I would like to understand any high hazard work that we have going on this holiday weekend (Sat – Mon). While it is up to us to define high hazard at this point, I trust that each of you understands the work in your area and the consequences associated with that work so we can discuss ‘high hazard’ as it pertains to the work this weekend. Going forward we will have more time to think through and categorize the work, etc.

We will talk more at Directors Council but I wanted to give you all a preview.

I have a meeting with the site office manager prior to our Directors Council to discuss expectations as well.

Thanks,
Johnathon

All:

Following up on previous discussions, please see the attached memorandum on the execution of high risk/high hazard work and the establishment of a new peer review program. Thanks to those who provided feedback and assisted in the development of the framework for peer reviews. The actions set forth in this memo are intended to further strengthen our learning culture, while maintaining a central tenant that implementation and accountability remain at your respective sites.
