Dear all,
I also support Pete, James and others about moving CHEP in Norfolk in 2022. This seems to me the most sensible decision given the uncertainties and given the fact that as I understand there is good chance that this will work financially.
For 2021, I think our community will benefit from a conference in Computing for High Energy Physics in the timescale of May. That would be an online conference in my opinion, like it happened for other big conferences line ICHEP this year. The point is that particularly younger people in early stages of their career (but not only) will have an opportunity to present their work, have the proceedings published in a journal, etc .. It will also offer the possibility to set a natural deadline for some of the work being done. The risk is that otherwise many of the fellows or first year postdoc will finish their first working experience without any of that, that is not good in my opinion. It is not obviously as ideal as an in-person CHEP because of the networking aspects Pete highlighted, but it is the best we can probably do.
As may others, happy to discuss this further in the next IAC.
Cheers
Simone

Dear Amber, all,
Let me add my voice to supporting the move to 2022 (as indicated in the poll). It seems to me to be the pragmatic decision in the circumstances.
On the CHEP-inos, I would also like to suggest that any such meetings are arranged jointly with HSF/WLCG, and therefore I’d like to encourage a discussion with Graeme and Simone on this topic before any concrete plans are made.
Finally, many thanks to Amber and her JLAB colleagues for dealing with this decision in such a practical way.
Best wishes,
James.

Dear CHEP IAC,
Greetings!
Jefferson Lab has a new events coordinator on staff, Anita Seay. Her first action was to negotiate with the hotels and the city of Norfolk about the possibilities concerning CHEP2021. The negotiating position is much stronger now than in May. The City of Norfolk and the hotels are making a recommendation to the hotels’ corporate offices of moving the conference without penalty to either Spring or Fall of 2022 if we can sign a contract that commits to an event in Norfolk in 2022 at the original number of attendees.
This is not the standard process for selecting the next CHEP, I know. Unusual times call for unusual actions. However, please let us know if you concur or not with the prospective date change

We can then discuss what to do about 2021 as well. I like the idea of Regional virtual ‘CHEPinos’ with maybe some abbreviated ‘plenary’ format.
The alternative is to proceed with the planning for an in-person CHEP2021 for reasons I’ll explain when we next meet.
Thank you so much, and we request a response by Sept 1.
