POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION
MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY, MISSISSIPPI STATE
MEDIUM ENERGY PHYSICS AT JEFFERSON LABORATORY
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position with the Medium Energy
Physics (MEP) Group at Mississippi State University. Our group currently
consists of two faculty members, five graduate students, and two undergraduate
students. The position is for one year initially, with the possibility of
renewal for up to three years upon mutual agreement and availability of funds.
The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to lead
the design and construction of a GEM detector based active collimator for
the SHMS spectrometer in Hall-C, as part of the 12 GeV upgrade of Jefferson
Laboratory. The active collimation system, will be an essential tool for the
effective operation of the SHMS spectrometer. All future experiments in Hall-C
will rely on the active collimation system for a detailed understanding and
modeling of the spectrometer acceptance and transport.
The candidate will also have the opportunity to teach introductory physics
courses and participate in the data taking and analysis of the QWeak experiment
in Hall C at Jefferson Laboratory. He/she will also be encouraged to develop
his/her own new ideas for experiments. The successful candidate will be
expected to supervise both graduate and undergraduate students.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in experimental nuclear or particle physics.
Prior experience with detector systems used in nuclear and particle physics
experiments is desirable. Applicants should send a CV, a description of
research interests, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent
directly to Prof. Dipangkar Dutta, Department of Physics, Mississippi State
University, Mississippi State, MS 39762. Review of applications will begin
immediately. The position remains open until filled.
Mississippi State University is committed in its efforts to hire candidates
who will enhance the diversity and gender balance of its faculty, staff and
students. We strongly encourage women and members of minority groups to
apply. Mississippi State University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity
Employer.
