Nuclear physics in the oilfield
/Dr. Tancredi Botto, Schlumberger-Doll Research
Wednesday, July 14, Cebaf Center Auditorium at 12 noon
/
****** Note the change of place *************
The so-called oilfield service industry is one of the most significant
and most diversified
areas of application of nuclear science and technology. For at least 50
years, a number
of techniques based on gamma rays and neutrons have been utilized to
accurately
interrogate and characterize deep subsurface reservoirs world-wide; yet
this field
continues evolve in order to address the unique challenges that are
presented by ever
deeper, hotter and higher pressure underground reservoirs.
In this talk I will present a very brief introduction to the oilfield
and review the s
cientific and technical challenges associated with hydro-carbons
exploration and
production. In the second part, I will then focus on a few selected
nuclear applications.
