Title:
Silicon Photomultipliers: A New Choice for High Sensitivity
Visible Light Detection
Carl Zorn
Abstract:
Within the last two decades, a new class of room
temperature solid-state photodetectors has been developed that have
many of the capabilities usually associated with vacuum
photomultipliers. Technically termed Limited Geiger Mode Avalanche
Photodiodes, they have gained the more familiar moniker of Silicon
Photomultipliers or SiPMs. This presentation will be an overview of
a photodetector technology that is rapidly gaining acceptance as an
alternate choice for applications requiring high sensitivity combined
with compactness, low voltage operation, position-sensitivity, or
immunity to high strength magnetic fields.
