*Hall B 12 GeV Staff Scientist

* (TERM POSITION ENDING FOUR YEARS FROM HIRE DATE)

DATE POSTED: FEBRUARY 24, 2011

SALARY RANGE: $54,400 - $108,100 (SS I/II)

DUTIES:
The Hall B Group at Jefferson Lab (JLab) seeks to fill the position of
experimental staff scientist in electromagnetic nuclear physics or
particle physics. The JLab Hall B group currently operates the CEBAF
Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and is engaged in a vigorous
research program to study the structure of nucleons and nuclei using
polarized electrons and photon beams and a large variety of targets. The
experimental program at 6 GeV will end in 2012 to enable installation of
new equipment that is needed in pursuit of research at the forefront of
hadron physics using the upgraded 12 GeV electron machine.

Construction of the CLAS12 detector system is currently underway. CLAS12
has been designed to carry out a vigorous research program of deeply
exclusive processes, elastic and resonance transition form factors at
high momentum transfer, and inclusive and semi-inclusive processes in
the DIS regime, both on nucleons and nuclei. A research program to study
hadron spectroscopy is also under development.

The successful candidate will take part in leading construction,
testing, and commissioning of part of the CLAS12 equipment. Major pieces
of equipment currently under construction are the tracking chambers,
calorimeters, time-of-flight detectors, gas Cherenkov counters, and
silicon-strip trackers. Also included are upgrades of the data
acquisition and trigger systems to cope with the increase in luminosity
and events size. In addition, two superconducting magnets, a toroid and
a solenoid have been ordered. Additional equipment, such as RICH
counters and neutron detectors, are under development.

The successful candidate will have responsibility for the development
and execution of a diverse experimental physics program in Hall B, the
hardware and/or software support of the CLAS12 detector, and other
instrumentation in Hall B. He/she will initiate new research proposals
and assume a lead role in the conceptual planning, design,
implementation, and operation of approved experiments.

The position will initially be for a four-year term with the strong
possibility of conversion into a regular staff position after two years
upon mutual interest and available funding.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

PhD in experimental Nuclear or Particle Physics and at least 3 years of
postdoctoral experience in an experimental nuclear or particle physics
environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Candidate should have demonstrated leadership in at least one research
program of current interest and the ability to conceive original physics
experiments with electromagnetic probes. A strong background in at least
one technical area such as instrumentation, software design or data
analysis is required.
