Dear Users Group,
After a bit of a delay, here is the first Users Group Update for 2014.
I hope that everyone will take a minute or two to look it over and to
pass on the information to others who might be interested.
*PROMOTING JLAB PHYSICS:
The Users Group and the Lab are planning to expand efforts to communicate
the JLab physics program to the broader community. We have several ideas
being examined, but we'll begin with the following suggestions/requests.
1. Speakers Bureau. We want to compile a list of speakers and topics,
aimed at broad physics themes rather than individual experiments. The idea
is to have a list of speakers who can communicate the interest in the program
to a broader audience, for people organizing conferences, colloquia, etc...
To begin with, please send me ideas for speakers (and topics) who you think
can give good talks to a broader physics audience. The goal is to have the
list available so that you can use it if you're looking for JLab speakers to
give a seminar or colloquium (for non-experts) in your department.
Another opportunity is through the APS women/minority speakers lists:
Women: http://www.aps.org/programs/women/speakers/index.cfm
Minorities: http://www.aps.org/programs/minorities/speakers/index.cfm
People who are currently on these lists report that they have received
invitations based on this, and while the number of such talks has been
limited, it's very easy to sign up. If you have a JLab-related talk
that would be good for a broader audience, this is a quick-and-easy option.
2. Physics Highlights. NSF is always on the look for "nuggets" - one page or
one slide highlights of NSF funded research. Not only would the NSF like to
see more of these, but the one-pagers are also important for DOE and
JLab. I hope that people will make sure to think about these as they are
finishing up the analysis of experiments or other work. You may have made
such a highlight for your work before results were finalized and not wanted to
submit another one with only minor updates, but for both the funding agencies
and the labs, these can be very useful. Users should work with JLab (through
Rolf Ent or Bob McKeown) to put together highlights for DOE, and it would
also be useful for users to share NSF nuggets with the lab.
*USERS GROUP MEETING:
We are in the process of planning for the Users Group Meeting, scheduled for
June 2-4, 2014. Please send me suggestions for 'keynote' speakers, and send
suggestions for sessions or other speakers to me or the organizing committee
co-chairs: Dipangkar Dutta, Steffen Strauch, or Katherine Myers.
*NSF NUCLEAR PHYSICS:
The Nuclear Physics Experimental Program is in transition and will be
seeking to fill at least one program director position. Interested parties
can contact Brad Keister <bkeister at nsf.gov> or Gail Dodge <gdodge at nsf.gov>
for information on the position.

p.s. Please let me know (johna at anl.gov) if you find these useful, or if
you have information that you would like see shared in a future email.
