JLab, Physics Community Mourns Death of Jean Mougey, First Hall A Leader

Physicist Jean Mougey died on Nov. 4, 2015, in Grenoble, France after an
extended illness.

Jean was a major figure in the nuclear physics community. At Saclay, he
led the development and exploitation of their world-leading (e,e’p)
facility, whose physics program provided one of the major motivations
for the construction of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator
Facility. In 1986, he moved to Virginia and became deeply involved in the
early development of CEBAF.He served as the first leader of Hall A from
its beginnings to 1992.This wasthe critical period when the hall’s
scientific collaboration was developed, its research program was
planned, and the experimental equipment needed to carry out that program
was designed and constructed. He returned to Saclay as construction was
nearing an end and the physics program was ready to be launched.

For many of us raised in the electron scattering community the words
“Frullani and Mougey” were magic words, they referred to an excellent
review in Advances in Nuclear Physics that many of us have used extensively.

Condolences may be sent to the family c/o Jean’s wife:

Christiane Mougey

28 rue Félix Esclangon,
