The IT Division is planning its monthly maintenance period for Tuesday, Aug. 16, 5-10 p.m. During this time, all MIS applications will be down while patches are applied to the central MIS database servers. All MIS applications will be back up by 10 p.m. Phones and computers on the Jefferson Lab network located in Building 89 will have a brief network outage while switches are replaced. Systems on the ACC network will not be affected. Patches to core Common User Environment software, such as Firefox and Flash, will be released to all Windows desktops. Linux and Windows patches will also be released to all systems. Plan on rebooting your Linux or Windows desktop as soon as possible, but no later than Friday, Aug. 19, to finalize the patch installations. Jefferson Lab Travelers and Travel Coordinators: Effective Immediately - Critical New Requirements for All Travel to or Passing through France
Due to increased security levels in France, the U.S. State Department has implemented new requirements for travelers going to or through France. Failure to follow the requirements or provide the requested information could result in denial of country clearance and jeopardize future travel.

New Web Traffic Protections Launch on Tuesday, Aug. 23
Jefferson Lab uses several automated protection systems to scan web traffic for malware and viruses. The protection provided by these scans has become increasingly limited by the expanding use of encryption for web traffic on the Internet. To provide continued security for Jefferson Lab systems, starting on Tuesday, Aug. 23, Jefferson Lab will begin decrypting some web traffic for desktop systems connected via the Desktop 1 and Business Services networks. This will allow the automated processes that the lab has in place to scan this traffic and remove identified viruses and malware. Traffic from known medical and financial institutions, however, will be exempted from being decrypted, as these are generally not sites from which malware and viruses are deployed. If you have any questions or concerns about this process, the CNI group is holding two, one-hour informational meetings in CEBAF Center room F113 at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, and Friday, Aug. 19. If you have general questions about this process, contact the IT Division Helpdesk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155. More specific questions should be reserved for the meetings in F113. To determine if your desktop is linked via the Desktop 1 network, visit this link from a web browser on your desktop system: https://cc.jlab.org/WhatsMyIP

Mentors Needed for Governor's School Students
Apparently, the word has gotten out about what great mentors we have at Jefferson Lab, because there are a lot of applications for mentorships for the next school year! The students will be in their senior year of high school and are enrolled in the local Governor's School for Science and Technology. The requirements for mentors are to provide a project that can be completed in an academic school year with the student working five hours a week/35 hours a quarter (nine weeks). The mentorship culminates with a formal presentation of the project by the student in both written and oral forms, with the oral presentation given in a symposium format before a judging panel of local professionals. If you are interested in serving as a mentor or if you have any questions, contact Brita R. Hampton at hampton at jlab.org by Wednesday, Aug. 17.
