November 9 Briefs Excerpts:
12 GeV Upgrade Update
Last week was very productive for the 12 GeV Upgrade project, with major achievements realized in both Halls B and C. In Hall B, the energization of the Torus magnet achieved full current of 3,770 Amps on Friday afternoon, Nov. 4. Mapping of the magnet field then commenced, and, once complete, the Torus will be powered down and installation of the remaining detectors will restart. See more about these achievements in the full JLab Weekly Briefs: https://www.jlab.org/news/briefs/latest
Veterans Day Salute and Veterans Opportunity to Help Recruiting Reach Out to Fellow Service Members
The Human Resources recruiting team is hoping to expand its outreach to military veterans by providing general information about our veteran staff members on the Jefferson Lab Careers page, such as a group photo and mention of staff members' combined years of service. If you are interested, the group photo of military veteran staff for this effort will be taken on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, at noon in the CEBAF Center atrium. Following the photo, veterans may pick up their honoree cupcake, view the service poster and sign the Veterans Day honor sheet. If you have any questions about this activity, contact Kathleen Wyrich at wyrich at jlab.org. Cupcakes for the Veterans Day salute will be available in CEBAF Center at 11:30 a.m. and will be delivered to the MCC, Bldg. 85, conference room after 12:30 p.m. to accommodate veterans working on the Accelerator Site who aren’t able to get to CEBAF Center for the group photo.
IT Maintenance Planned for Nov. 15, 5-7 p.m.
The IT Division is planning a maintenance period for 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15. During this time, there may be a couple of short internet outages, while network devices are reconfigured. The Zimbra mail servers will suffer a short outage while they are rebooted to finalize patches and install updated certificates. Finally, Windows and Linux patches will be released to CUE-managed desktops and servers. There may be short outages overnight while these servers are rebooted to finalize patch installation. Plan on rebooting your Windows or Linux desktop no later than Friday, Nov. 18, to finalize patch installation. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the IT Division Helpdesk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.
Jefferson Lab Offering Financial Planning Workshop on Nov. 15
TIAA-CREF will host a Financial Planning Lunch and Learn Workshop geared toward women who are interested in learning more about planning and controlling their long-term financial well-being. The entire Jefferson Lab population is welcome to attend this free workshop; however, the main focus of this event will be women at any point in their careers. IT Division Conducts Survey of Computer Systems
As part of an overall initiative to improve cybersecurity across the enterprise, the Department of Energy is currently rolling out a plan to deploy multi-factor authentication (MFA) to protect data and systems. MFA usually combines a pin or a password with some kind of hardware token or card, which makes it more difficult to compromise an account. Jefferson Lab already has MFA rolled out to protect certain types of sensitive data/systems, such as those on the business services network. In order to comply with the current DOE initiatives and align with best-business practices, the laboratory will be enhancing its MFA implementation using an approach that will minimize the impact to the mission while reducing risk. As part of the process, the IT Division is conducting an analysis to better understand the Jefferson Lab computing and network environment. The next step in the analysis is a survey of all Jefferson Lab computers connected to the network. If you haven’t yet taken the survey, or for more information, see the linked memo: https://www.jlab.org/memo/it-division-conducts-survey-computer-systems
