Excitement Builds For Science Bowl

Excitement is building at Jefferson Lab as the date for the Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl draws near. On Feb. 3, 13 teams face off on their knowledge of math and science. Read more here .

ACCELERATOR SCIENCE / EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR PHYSICS
The CEBAF Accelerator continued delivering beam throughout the weekend and into the beginning of this week. On Monday , Accelerator Operations performed radiofrequency recovery work to lower the RF trip rate and improve beam delivery to all four halls. On Tuesday , Ops also performed a pass change, which for the first time resulted in the highest-pass beam available being delivered to every hall.

THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
A new method has been proposed to match the transverse momentum-dependent (TMD) and collinear factorization theorems in QCD. This approach builds on the inverse-error weighting of the TMD and collinear approximations of the cross sections. The corrections to the factorization theorems induce an uncertainty on the matched cross section, which remains under control also at low energies, such as the ones available in Drell-Yan events at the Large Hadron Collider and potentially in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering at Jefferson Lab .

ESH&Q
The Real Cost of Accidents
Many people do not realize how expensive accidents really are. The fact is, aside from the pain and suffering from an injury, and the repair or replacement of equipment, indirect costs continue well beyond the repair.

For example, say an employee receives an electric shock from faulty equipment. Even without injury, people will immediately stop work to give aid or call for help. When help does arrive, employees generally do not immediately return to work. They may continue with clean up, repairs or remain on the scene merely to watch. Investigation into why the accident occurred contributes to the cost of the accident. Also, alternative equipment may have to be utilized while replacement or repairs are completed; this reduces efficiency, which represents another indirect cost.

Studies show that indirect costs of an accident are usually greater than the direct costs. A conservative estimate is for every $1 of direct costs, there are $3 of indirect costs. Some studies (see OSHA article: Business Case for Safety and Health ) indicate hidden costs can be four to 10 times the direct cost. The best and most cost effective way to manage the costs of accidents is through prevention.

COMPUTING
Copier Training Videos Are Available Online
If you missed the training for the new copiers, you can still watch video training offered by Xerox. The videos are linked here:

    * Xerox Copier Model C7025
    * Xerox Copier Model C8045
If you have any questions about how to use the new copiers, contact the Copy Center at x7666.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Diversity Colloquium Now Available Online
Last October, Jefferson Lab had the honor of hosting Dr. Jane Fernandes, the nation’s first deaf woman to lead a college and the first female President of Guilford College, who delivered a colloquium in which she shared her unique experience regarding the personal challenges she has encountered, and also offered ways to build a more inclusive work environment. Dr. Fernandes was generous enough to allow us to record her presentation, which is now available to the internal Jefferson Lab audience at the link (Jefferson Lab username and password required to view). Human Resources offers this powerful message for you to review and asks that you also consider ways you can help promote inclusivity both in your own work area and across the lab.

Jefferson Lab to Test Tornado Warning Siren at 10:30 a.m. on Friday , Feb. 2
Jefferson Lab's tornado warning siren will undergo its monthly operational test at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 2 . Don't respond to the siren; this is a test of the siren system and not a personnel response exercise. Individuals planning to be in the Central Materials Storage Area (where the siren is located) while the test is taking place must have with them and wear two layers of hearing protection.

TIAA-CREF Individual C ounseling Spring Dates Available
TIAA-CREF is offering Individual Co unseling Sessions at Jefferson Lab , where you can discuss your personal financial situation with a consultant on a confidential basis. The consultant will be available to discuss how to help you achieve your financial goals by investing in financial solutions, such as mutual funds, brokerage, life insurance and annuities. Appointments are now available on Feb. 15, March 15 , April 12 and May 17 . To schedule an appointment on any of these dates, call TIAA-CREF at (800) 732-8353 , Monday through Friday , 9 a.m.–8 p.m. These appointments will be held in Support Service Center room 221.

CONTACT
The JLab Weekly provides information on the status of safety, accelerator operations, experiments, reviews, upcoming activities and special events. Deadline for submission is every Tuesday by 10 a.m. Submit new items to: the Communications Office or contact Kandice Carter at x7263.

PUBLISHED JOURNAL ARTICLES
Jan. 21-27, 2018
Np published articles this week.

Remember to submit your papers for approval to the Jefferson Lab Publications database .

The next Publications Refresher Course will take place Friday , Feb. 16, at 10 a.m. in CEBAF Center room F228. Sessions typically last 30-45 minutes and authors will learn how to submit manuscripts to the Publications Review and Approval System, how to make recommended revisions to papers during the signature process, and how to add the relevant information once the paper is published. If you plan to attend, R.S.V.P. to Kim Edwards by close of business on Feb. 15.
