Four to Beam Up!

For the first time, CEBAF delivers beam to all four of its experimental areas simultaneously. Read more here .

ACCELERATOR SCIENCE / EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR PHYSICS
Hall A has started the MARATHON experiment run. This experiment uses a novel tritium target (the first at an electron laboratory in decades). The experiment will access the elusive down to up quark (parton) ratio at the largest values of parton momentum in the nucleon.

Hall C has completed the new Super High Momentum Spectrometer initial commissioning and moved on to starting first 12 GeV-era commissioning physics. A first measurement, running now, will look for first evidence for the color transparency (CT) phenomenon from nucleons in nuclei. CT, a key property of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) as a color gauge theory, predicts that nucleons involved in reactions with sufficiently high momentum transfers can pass through nuclear matter with dramatically reduced interactions.

THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
A recent paper reports work that extends the improved Collins-Soper-Sterman (iCSS) factorization formalism to the case of polarized observables, focusing in particular on the Sivers effect in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. The paper demonstrates the validity of the well-known relation between the (transverse momentum dependent) Sivers function and the (collinear twist-3) Qiu-Sterman function within the iCSS framework. The relation allows one to interpret the functions in terms of the average transverse momenta of unpolarized quarks in a transversely polarized spin-1/2 hadron.

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT & LOGISTICS
Property Custodians: Expired Property Passes Must be Closed Out
Jefferson Lab Property Passes are used to provide authorization for lab property to be taken off the premises for temporary periods. Property passes document the movement of everything from laptop computers, devices used for displays at events and public speaking engagements, to equipment being sent away for repairs. These expired passes need to be either closed out and archived or renewed. For more information, see the full memo .

ESH&Q
Save Lives: Donate Blood on Feb. 7
A typical donation of just one pint of blood can save up to three lives. Start the new year with the life-saving decision to donate at the American Red Cross Blood Drive at Jefferson Lab on Wednesday , Feb. 7, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in CEBAF Center room F113. New and repeat donors are encouraged to attend; Walk-ins are welcome. For more information, see the full memo .

COMPUTING
Computer User Account Process Changes
In order to maintain an account at Jefferson Lab, individuals must maintain current security awareness training and must be designated a valid Jefferson Lab type (such as Staff, User, Contractor, etc). Beginning on February 5 , accounts with expired or untaken Security Awareness Training or that have invalid Jefferson Lab type designations will be automatically disabled. Email notifications to affected accounts will begin today .
For Users, the required training is GEN034U: Security Awareness for Users .
For all others (Staff, Contractors, etc), the required training is GEN034: Annual Security Awareness for Employees & Subcontractors

Copier Replacement and Training
As part of the Copier contract, Jefferson Lab is getting new copiers installed to replace current copiers. There will be a brief outage of printing for each new copier during configuration. This replacement begins Wednesday , Jan. 24, and continues through Friday , Jan. 26. Training will be offered to familiarize staff and users with the new copiers on Monday , Jan. 29, at the following locations and times:
• 10 a.m. in the SSC Copy area for copier model 8045.
• 10:30 a.m. in the SSC Copy area for copier model 7025.
• 11 a.m. in CEBAF Center room F293 for copier model 8045.
• 11:30 a.m. in CEBAF Center at the intersection of Wings A and B for copier model 7025.
If you have any questions or concerns about the new copiers, contact the Copy Center at x7666.

Support Service Center Bldg. Network Outages Planned
Two network outages are planned for the SSC (Bldg. 28) to upgrade network equipment. The first outage, for the west side of the building, will be on Tuesday , Feb. 13. The second, for the east side of the building, will be on Thursday , Feb. 15. Each outage will last from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and will include phones, desktops and Wireless networking on that side of the building. For questions, contact Bryan Hess at bhess at jlab.org .

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Colloquium: NASA’s Trusted Autonomy and Computing Incubator Programs
Two NASA scientists will present on local programs underway at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton. Cara Leckey will give an overview of the High-Performance Computing Incubator Project, which is developing mini-applications intended for rapid code adaptability. B. Danette Allen will discuss the role of autonomy in artificial intelligence for enabling new missions, such as asteroid retrieval, planetary exploration, pollution measurements in historically inaccessible areas, and the integration of unmanned aircraft systems into our everyday lives. This 1.5-hour-long colloquium will take place Jan. 30 in the CEBAF Center auditorium at 2 p.m.

Several Volunteers Still Needed for STEM Career Days
Jefferson Lab will be participating in two Career Days to support National Engineers week and provide interested students with a half-day exploration into career fields related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Volunteer signup ends Feb. 9. For more information and to volunteer, see the full memo .

PRIZES AND AWARDS PROGRAMS
JSA Thesis Prize Nominations Accepted
JSA is now accepting nominations for the 2017 Thesis Prize through 5 p.m. Feb. 16. Nominations for theses based on some aspect of the research program or science conducted at Jefferson Lab and completed during calendar year 2017 or during the last quarter of 2016 are eligible. This prize is supported by the JSA Initiatives Fund Program. FOr more information, see the full announcement .

JSA Postdoc Prize Deadline Extended!
Calling all physics postdocs: It’s not too late to apply for a $10,000 grant to support outstanding theoretical or experimental research work associated with the science program at Jefferson Lab. The new deadline for 2018 submissions is 5 p.m. on Feb. 13. This grant is supported by the JSA Initiatives Fund Program. For more information, see the full announcement .

L’Oréal Offers Grants to Outstanding Postdoctoral Women
The L’Oréal USA For Women in Science fellowship program honors female postdoctoral scientists with grants of $60,000 each. The program is currently seeking five exceptional female scientists looking to advance their research and serve as role models for the next generation of girls in STEM. Applications are due by Feb. 2. For more information and an application, visit the link .

CONTACT
The JLab Weekly provides information on the status of safety, accelerator operations, experiments, reviews, upcoming activities and special events. Deadline for submission is every Tuesday by 10 a.m. Submit new items to: the Communications Office or contact Kandice Carter at x7263.
